About Me

Dr Russell Senanayake is a Consultant Endocrinologist currently working at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. He completed medical school at the University of London in 2012. His postgraduate and specialist training were undertaken across Oxford and Cambridge, and academic training undertaken at the University of Cambridge. Over the course of his postgraduate training, he achieved various qualifications including being awarded a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2024 where he achieved the Milo Keynes prize for excellence with his PhD assessments. He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (2015), MSc in Endocrinology & Diabetes, Queen Mary's University of London (2017), Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education (2017), and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (2025).

 

His clinical practice encompasses all general endocrine disorders, including pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and reproductive endocrinology. Additionally, he manages specialist clinics in pituitary disorders, secondary hypertension, and neuroendocrine tumours. Dr Senanayake was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at King's College London School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Science. His academic interests include pituitary disease, adrenal disease (including Cushing's syndrome), secondary hypertension, and developing new endocrine imaging techniques to improve surgical cure rates and quality of life for patients. He has successfully introduced a novel PET service for imaging of endocrine disorders across the King's Health Partnership (including Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals and King's College Hospital). His research group is currently looking at ways to improve pituitary and adrenal imaging, including using PET radiotracers and optimising existing imaging modalities such as MRI.

 

Dr Senanayake remains engaged with formal medical education at an undergraduate level for King's College London students, including roles as a KCL educational supervisor and academic scholarly project supervisor. He is actively involved in postgraduate training, including as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians PACEs exam and member of the speciality certificate exam (Diabetes & Endocrinology) question writing group.
